HOUSING

Government Camp

Housing is limited in Government Camp. However, Skibowl does manage the Summit Apartments located in Govy, along with several other private homes which are used for employee housing. To find out more about housing availability, please contact Jennifer Kimmel at 503-913-4821 or   jen@go.skibowl.com .

Camping

While camping has always been an option for our employees, a lack of responsible stewardship on behalf of employee campers in recent years has driven the Forest Service to request that employees of the ski areas on Mt. Hood no longer camp as a housing option. While, technically, it is still legal to camp long-term, you MUST keep your camp site clean and obey ALL regulations regarding use of our National Forest Lands. Employees who do not respect these regulations will be held fully accountable and financially responsible for any damages to the camp site area. For more information about camping in our local Forests, click   HERE .

The Villages of Mt. Hood

There are actually numerous ‘villages’ which make up the HOODLAND corridor along highway 26 from Sandy to Government Camp. These villages include; Cherryville, Alder Creek, Brightwood, Wildwood, Wemme, Welches, Zig Zag, and Rhododendron. In each of these villages you can find seasonal or year-round rentals. Two good places to find local rentals are through our local newspaper   The Mountain Times   or by searching the web through sites like   Trulia   or   Rent.com .

Rooms for Rent

If you’re not having any luck in your search, don’t forget to contact the HR office at 503-272-3206 ext. 1106, or by stopping by.   We are located on the third floor above the Ratskeller Restaurant in downtown Government Camp.   HR has an employee bulletin board where staff can post rooms available or needed.

TRANSPORTATION

Carpool

The HR department at Skibowl   (located on the third floor of the Ratskeller restaurant)   has a rideshare program where employees can offer-up rides for a small daily donation for gas. This helps to minimize the number of vehicles on the road and helps our staff get to and from work economically. For more information on ride sharing, contact the HR office at 503-272-3206 ext. 1106 or by emailing at   becky@go.skibowl.com .

Mt. Hood Express

The Mt. Hood Express provides daily bus services between Gresham and Government Camp. Many employees use the Express as their regular commute to work. The bus has many stops in Government Camp, including Skibowl West, downtown and the Summit Apartments. Schedules vary by the season. The Express also links to Portland’s transportation network.

THE MT. HOOD AREA (Hoodland)

Portland  (65 miles west of Skibowl)

The ‘big city’ is about an hour’s drive from Government Camp. Portland has everything you could want or need, along with that special ‘Keep Portland Weird’, laid-back, hipster life style which has made P-town the focus of national attention on shows like Portlandia. Spend the day on the waterfront. Portland really is a trip!

Sandy  (25 miles west of Skibowl)

The town of Sandy has almost everything you could ever need, including a Safeway for groceries and a Fred Meyers where you can buy just about anything. Sandy also has a cinema, and some of the cheapest gas in the entire State of Oregon. Sandy is about a 45-minute drive from Govy.

Welches  (12 miles west of Skibowl)

Most locals see Welches as the ‘hub’ of the Hoodland corridor. Welches offers many amenities and services, including the only local primary and middle school and post office. In Welches, there is a Thriftway grocery store, where you will find just about everything, but you will pay a premium because it caters to tourism. There is also a gas station, but, like groceries, the price of gas will get cheaper the closer you get to Sandy. Welches is only 15 minutes from Govy.

Government Camp

Government Camp is a village, not a city, and sits at the summit of where Highway 26 crosses Mt. Hood. Govy, as it is called by the locals, sits at 4000ft above sea level and gets (on average) over 230 inches of snow each winter. Winter in Govy usually starts around mid-October with the first real snow fall, and continues until the snows begin to melt in late April. Temperatures in Govy can reach the mid-90s in the summer and as low as zero in the winter; but the average winter temperature is between 10 and 40 degrees (Fahrenheit). Government Camp offers many services including; groceries (Govy General), gas (Chevron), numerous restaurants, several bars, equipment rentals and sales, a post office, laundry facilities, liquor store, museums and more. The Skibowl campus extends almost the entire span of Government Camp proper.

PAYROLL AND BANKING

Skibowl pays on a bi-weekly (every two week) basis. Our payroll provider is Paycom. Employees can pick-up their paychecks from their supervisors in their departments any time after 2pm on payday. Checks which are not picked-up will be mailed to the address on file by the following Monday. If returned, they are placed in the employee’s personnel file and a notice is sent to the employee. Skibowl adheres to all BOLI regulations regarding final and last pay. We offer free direct deposit of your pay or access to a direct-deposit (pay) credit card through Sole Paycard. Paychecks are not cashed by Skibowl under any circumstances.

Employees are expected to both clock-in at the time clock and sign-in on a sign-in sheet. This is to protect YOU. If you forget to clock-in, we can still locate and post your work shift from the sign-in sheet, and visa-versa.

The closest bank is located in Welches (Clackamas County Bank). There is a Wells Fargo and a US Bank in Sandy.

WHAT TO BRING

The weather and temperatures on Mt. Hood range dramatically from season to season. If you will be coming to Oregon in the summer, plan on warm temperatures (60-high-90s) and in the winter, prepare for the cold (zero – 50) Fahrenheit.

Your best friends in the winter months will be a good, sturdy, water-proof pair of boots, warm socks, a warm, tight-weave hat, dry gloves and a heavily insulated jacket.  Uniform shirts, jackets, vests and jackets will be issued to you upon attending orientation, but we ask that you not wear these items when you are not on duty. In addition, these items will need to be returned at the end of the work season.
