Oregon's winter resorts look ready to put two dismal snow winters behind them this week when all the larger resorts in the state open in time for the Christmas holidays.
Mt. Hood Skibowl plans to open Wednesday.
The Oregon Cascades have been getting hammered by snow and the forecast calls for another two feet overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
Oregon's higher elevation resorts have been scraping by the past two winters, but Skibowl, Hoodoo and Willamette Pass have had only a few full days of operation between them. Those days came mainly following the epic 2014 storm in February that buried Portland with snow and pretty much the entire state.
This week Skibowl will open two lifts at 3 p.m. Wednesday, then opens to have all four chairlifts running by the weekend. Look for extended holiday hours at all Oregon ski resorts beginning Friday, Dec. 18 through Sunday, Jan. 3.
And note that enthusiasm remained high through the bleak winters, so expect to contend with crowds. The ski areas and related mountain communities need the business.
Cross country ski and snowmobile trails will also be in good shape after two winters of doing without, except at the higher elevations.
